  16. <p>Gangs turn a Florida interstate into a mobile killing zone
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    As if hurricane Andrew wasn't bad enough for Florida's
  19. tourism industry, now the state is facing a man-made disaster:
  20. snipers taking potshots at cars along Interstate 295, conduit for
  21. some 80,000 vehicles a day around downtown Jacksonville and the
  22. primary route for East Coast snowbirds headed south for
  23. Florida's beaches.
  24. </p>
  25. <p>    Since February more than 150 shootings and rock throwings
  26. have been reported by drivers along the 15-mile stretch of
  27. highway. Police have confirmed 37 attacks, one death and three
  28. injuries. After the American Automobile Association warned
  29. motorists to avoid I-295 this month, National Guard troops began
  30. patrolling in military vehicles and helicopters. Despite the
  31. precautions, three more shootings were reported. Then police got
  32. a break. Two teenage gang members were arrested on attempted
  33. murder charges in the shooting of a motorist. The troops aren't
  34. going home just yet, however. Police believe other gangs may be
  35. involved too.
